Join us at MILK at The Fruitmarket Gallery one of the UK's most respected contemporary art venues. We will be serving up a delicious 3 course seasonal dinner using some of Scotland's best produce and you will be treated to a guided tour of the latest exhibition -  Jac Leirner Add It Up.

The tour will be hosted by Ruth Burgon, Curator of Research and Interpretation at The Fruitmarket Gallery. Ruth has just completed a PhD at the University of Edinburgh, with her thesis entitled ‘Pace, rhythm, repetition: walking in art since the 1960s.’ She has published in MIRAJ (Moving Image Review & Arts Journal), Tate Papers and The Sculpture Journal. For this event, Ruth will give a short tour of Jac Leirner: Add It Up, not only offering an introduction to Leirner’s work, but also providing an insight into its installation, and the artistic and curatorial decisions that took place in the making of the exhibition.

 

Brazilian artist Jac Leirner (b. 1961, São Paulo) established her international reputation in the early 1990s. She makes art out of quantities and collections of specific, carefully chosen objects. Her art is one of retrieval, often using materials that would normally be thrown away or overlooked – packaging, cigarette papers, aeroplane boarding passes, completed newspaper puzzles. She also delights in everyday, functional things whose aesthetic qualities can escape our notice – banknotes, spirit levels, rulers, ropes, ashtrays, fastenings and cables. Through her meticulous arrangement of these items into grids, rows and lines, Leirner gives presence to the mundane, making us look again at the material world we inhabit.
